As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.
Who can say no to a soft pretzel?
Generally, these twisted treats are placed into the lower tier snack category, reserved for baseball games, movies, and the occasional carnival-type event, but the kicked-up, cheese-stuffed soft pretzels at Town Hall Tap
, Town Hall Lanes
, and Town Hall Brewer
y are available all day, every day and that's pretty much the definition of a blessing and a curse.
Served warm, these brewhouse pretzels are made with a beer-based bread dough and stuffed with spicy jalapeño cheese. They're finished with an extra dusting of parmesan and spices for good measure and come with a side of the mysterious and addictive "tap sauce," a cheesy beer-spiked concoction that makes just about any appetizer that much more appetizing.
It would be a sin to order these pretzels without a beer to go with them, and fortunately Town Hall has a lot of options. Where the Tap and Brewery feature lots of guest beers and their own seasonal and year-round brews, the Lanes focuses more on hard-to-source ciders and has an exclusive beer, the Super Strike, a light and easy-drinking lager. Our favorite pairing is with the Town Hall Thunderstorm, a floral and honey-scented summery beer that is still on tap at the Lanes.
