100 Favorite Dishes: No. 92, Eat Street Buddha Kitchen's banana cream pie French toast

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.

Finding yourself in the Sunday brunch "where do we go?" situation with a big group of people is always kind of a logistical nightmare. One person is off gluten, another person requires a full bar, someone else is in the mood for Asian...where can you tick all the boxes off the list and know every dish you order is going to be equally good?

As of last month that place is Eat Street Buddha Kitchen, the Nicollet Ave. newcomer that serves everything from shellfish curry and oysters from the raw bar to Korean eggs Benedict and a killer piece of French toast.

We were delighted to find that the chefs at ESBK are as skilled at flipping flapjacks as they are with a sushi mat. Sweet-and-salty fans will love the caramel and candied bacon French toast, but at the East meets West themed weekend brunch the must-order item is the banana cream pie version.

It starts with slices of spongy and subtle cinnamon bread soaked in rich eggy custard spiked with Grand Marnier, so it's as decadent as bread pudding. It's topped with patisserie shop-perfect creme anglaise, sliced caramelized bananas, and sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs for a nice textural finish.

Order it with a $5 house Bloody Mary for maximum enlightened eating.
