As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.
A classic breakfast favorite that will keep you full all day
The entrance for the French Hen Cafe
on Selby Avenue in St. Paul doesn't lead directly to the restaurant. Eaters must first wander through their neighboring flower shop. The sweet perfume of poms, roses, and freesia is a lovely prelude to your first meal of the day.
However, when you cross the threshold into the cafe, all of that fades into memory as the cozy scents of freshly brewed coffee, crispy cooked potatoes, and freshly baked goods wash over you. While there are many dishes we love to order here, it's mandatory that someone at the table gets (and shares) a fat plate of biscuits and gravy.
We've loved this dish since the cafe first opened, and we've continued that love affair even as time has marched on and the French Hen has made some small changes.
What makes this just about the most perfect example of biscuits and gravy in town is its simplicity. Fluffy, oven-plucked drop biscuits aren't tarted up with any add-ins or chef-whims; they are simply cooked to a crispy exterior and fluffy interior and then blanketed with a creamy pork sausage gravy. The main event is served alongside two eggs cooked to order and a slab of crusty hash browns, making this a dish that's as good as it gets when it comes to jump-starting your day.
