100 Favorite Dishes: No. 54, Craftmade almond toffee

Pretty much the best toffee ever

Pretty much the best toffee ever

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.
We like our sweets with a little bit of salt. The addictive toffee made locally by Steve Kippels at Craftmade Toffee in St. Paul are sweet nuggets of post-meal perfection. Chocolate, nuts, and butter are melded into a bite that is so much better than your average confection.

Inside every bite is a bit of the passion that brought Kippels into this business. He first learned the craft of proper toffee in his mother's kitchen at the age of five. In the fifty odd years since, he has been refining and honing that craft.

The toffee is available in several varieties, but the best example has to be the almond with dark chocolate. The toasty nuts are embedded in that buttery, toffee crunch and sandwiched between two layers of deep, rich chocolate. Your dental work is safe with this candy; it's easily devoured and doesn't linger in the molars. Not one scrap goes to waste.

Pick up one of these golden bags and you'll feel like you've got one of Willy Wonka's golden tickets: Simply holding one means you're already a winner. Each is dated and numbered, so you know what you're getting is fresh. 8 ounces is $12 and 16 ounces is $24 and both are available for purchase online.
