100 Favorite Dishes: No. 49, Al's Breakfast's bacon waffle
Put simply, Al's Breakfast is one of the coolest diners to grab one of the best breakfasts in town. Why else would people cram into the 10-foot wide space, with little to no breathing room, to wait for one of the 14 bar stools to open up? This Dinkytown restaurant transforms the "most important meal of the day" into one of the best meals you'll ever eat.
It's hard to pick a favorite in this world of pancakes, omelets, and potatoes, but we promise you can't go wrong with the bacon waffle. No need to order a side of anything with this one; Al's adds chopped up bacon right to their waffle batter. No tiny bacon bits here either -- you'll get bite-sized bacon chunks in every delectable bite. It's almost like two breakfast feasts in one.
But it's not just bacon stealing the show here. A good waffle begins with a good batter: the right balance of eggs, flour, vanilla, and everything else combined and mixed just long enough to create the perfect thickness for a hot waffle iron.
Al's waffle turns out just as it should: a crispy exterior that, when pierced by your fork, makes way for a fluffy (but not doughy) inside. It's cooked evenly inside and out. Served with only a pat of butter, it's up to you whether to add syrup because it's just as delicious without.
Al's only serves breakfast and closes up shop by 1 p.m. daily. Chances are high you'll have to wait for your spot at the bar and patience is key: You'll be overlooking those already eating while you wait.
