100 Favorite Dishes: No. 100, First Course's blue cheese fried olives

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.

Salty, creamy, crispy, and just the slightest bit fruity: That's the essence of the blue cheese-stuffed fried olives at First Course. If we wanted to be even more succinct in our description we could just call them the perfect wine snack.

We're used to seeing stuffed olives, all booze-soaked in the bottom of a martini glass, but the team at First Course convinced us they could be so much more than a cocktail garnish. Pungent blue cheese takes the place of the olive pit and then each olive is rolled in a cornmeal-flour combo and given a flash fry.

A plate will run you just $4 and pairs well with a glass of just about anything red. But we like them even better with a Blackthorn Cider or crisp Sunner Kolsch, and they make an unexpectedly good match for Monk's Cafe's Flemmish Sour beer, all currently on tap at this tucked-away neighborhood bistro.
