100 Favorite Dishes: Jasmine Deli's bánh mì
As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2010, coming this spring, Hot Dish is serving up a hundred of our favorite local dishes. Send your own nominations to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Consider the bánh mì as the ultimate French/Vietnamese mash-up, and one of the few positive things to come out of colonialism in Indochina. Take a few Francais staples--baguette, pork pate, mayonnaise--then season and garnish with the Vietnamese culinary mainstays of fish sauce, hot peppers, and cilantro. We've been eating Jasmine Deli's bánh mì for years, having become addicted to the way the crusty/soft bread cradles the meaty filling (our fave = mock-duck), which is interlaced with crunchy carrot ribbons, fresh cilantro springs, a rich gloss of mayo, and a few lip-buzzing jalapeno strips. Plus, the paper-wrapped sandwiches are perfectly portable and Jasmine is just a few pedals from Washburn Fair Oaks Park, by the MIA. Once the snow melts, it's a perfect spring date.
