In fact, the subject has a tendency to bring forth the most vitriolic of viewpoints, especially from those whose position is founded on an ironclad notion of morality that refuses to be questioned, debated, or compromised. For an organization like NARAL (National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League) Pro-Choice Minnesota, which has long dealt with such mindsets, obstinate combativeness cannot help but exasperate. It is precisely for this reason that the group's annual Comedy for Choice fundraiser feels so refreshing. Coming up on its 13th year, the event allows a night to step back from dueling with moral crusaders to enjoy a showcase of some of the most creative comic minds in the Twin Cities. Hosted by comedian Jenn Schaal, the event mixes standup sets from rising stars Mike Earley and Kate Urguhart with a performance from veteran comic/magician David Harris. Those who prefer music-infused laughs will be gratified by Valley Meadows, a.k.a. Gary Schishynszenski and MC Tom Johnson, the absurdity inspired hip-hop alter egos forged by standups Chris Knutson and Zach Coulter. Overseeing it all will be Sen. Al Franken, one of Minnesota's comedic pioneers, himself no stranger to using comedy as catharsis. With the ongoing resurgence of challenges to reproductive rights, a resilient sense of humor could be a vital means of defense. For tickets, call... More >>>
