Fresh Traditions, an annual fashion show benefitting the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT), joins MNFashion Week this Friday as it showcases five designers who weave tradition with contemporary fashion. Like CHAT, the event celebrates Hmong culture and pushes the boundaries of what is possible for Hmong artists. For the evening, each of the designers—Ashley Yang, Dokiang Thao, Kao Lee Thao, Marlena Thao, and Sai Chang—is required to create an entire outfit incorporating five Hmong fabrics, resulting in pieces that are fresh and unique while keeping the vibrant colors and textures of traditional Hmong dress. In the end, this will be an evening celebrating the power of cultural heritage and the possibilities for the future as designers continue to make names for themselves both within the Hmong community and in the fashion world.
