Few comics of this era—or any era—are as wonderfully distinctive as Emo Philips. The lanky funnyman for years sported a Prince Valliant haircut and a faraway stare into some alternate universe where he culled his strange, cerebral jokes, which he then would deliver in an unmistakable, cracking falsetto. Philips has retired the haircut, but more than three decades later he's still cranking out inspired, perfectly honed bits and serving them up in the guise of his childlike, airy-voiced stage character.
