While the southern half of the U.S. tends to garner most of the praise for perfecting the culinary art of barbeque, rare are the carnivorous Twin Cities diners who won't grow ravenous at the thought of slow-cooked meats basting in a savory mop sauce. Those Midwesterners who spent the winter months hankering for the gluttonous grills of summer will likely salivate over the succulent selections offered at the inaugural Great Midwest Rib Fest. Hosted by Mystic Lake Casino, the outdoor event features ribs from eight cookers from around the United States. Lending their discerning palates to the occasion, a panel of chefs and food writers headed by Jack Riebel, the James Beard-nominated co-founder and former executive chef at Butcher & the Boar, will evaluate each selection and award some $15,000 in prizes. Audiences are similarly encouraged to let their tastes be known by sampling from each participant and contributing a vote toward the Best of the Fest award.
