Woman must give up obese dog that survived night frozen to sidewalk

A Wisconsin woman has been ordered to give up her dog after she let it freeze to the sidewalk last December. Luckily the collie, named Jiffy, was so fat that it was able to survive frozen.

Alice Bigler, 59, was charged with a misdemeanor for intentionally mistreating an animal. She must give up Jiffy and can't have any other pets for the next year.

Jiffy weighs more than 120 pounds, so the layers of fat kept the collie insulated.

More from the Associated Press:

She told police she tried to get the dog inside but couldn't, and instead checked on him every few hours.

The dog is 11 or 12 years old, Eirich said. Shelter workers poured warm water over Jiffy's back end to unstick him from the sidewalk, Payne said, adding it was too soon to say whether he suffered any long-term effects.
