Today, the baby died.
It's unlikely that charges will be pressed against the mom, who is understandably heart-broken. Police haven't yet officially determined if the death was an accident, but sources say that it most definitely looks like one.
"It's under investigation," is all that Stillwater Police Chief John Gannaway would say.
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, the mom headed out of Stillwater Medical Group clinic with her three-year-old and one-year-old in tow. She belted the toddler into a safety seat and got into her SUV. Then the mother pulled her car forward and hit the stroller where her one-year-old was waiting.
"The mother didn't see the stroller," Gannaway said.
The mom immediately rushed the baby back inside the clinic, where the clinic cared for the child and, at about 10: 25 a.m., called 911. An ambulance took the baby to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where the child remained in critical condition.
The baby died this morning.
"We're not going to release any names," Gannaway says. "No sense putting the family through any more than they're already going through."
KSTP quoted Gannaway stating that the mother will not face charges, though he told us that was an overstatement and he's not ready to say for sure.
