WCCO's Rachel Slavik on being butt of Colbert's cold weather coverage jokes: "I think it's great" [VIDEO]
Colbert on Slavik: "Hammering with a banana is but one of the many food-based techniques that reporters have at the ready to demonstrate weather conditions to those of us who have never been out of doors."
Stephen Colbert had some fun at the expense of WCCO reporter Rachel Slavik last night.
To illustrate how cold it was Monday morning, Slavik used a frozen banana to hammer a nail into a block of wood live on the air. That stunt became the centerpiece of a Colbert segment mocking the media's coverage of the polar vortex.
Here's video of the Colbert segment, with the Slavik part starting about 2:30 in:
"I just laughed -- I think it's great," she said. "My initial reaction was to be embarrassed, but it's awesome at the same time."
Slavik said her reaction is shared by her colleagues in the WCCO newsroom.
"Can we say this is the pinnacle of my journalism career?" she said, chuckling. "But it's great to have a little fun with it. Making ourselves look silly adds another layer to our cold weather coverage."
