In recent years, a game between the Vikings and 49ers would be considered a bit of a yawner. But now that the 'Niners have apparently regained respectability, this week's match-up has some intriguing story lines that make it a game to watch:
- It's Brett Favre's first home game.
- It's the week's only game between undefeated teams (even if it is only the third game of the season).
- It's a match-up between football's No. 1 and No. 3 leading rushers, Adrian Peterson and the 49ers' Frank Gore, respectively (though both will be playing hurt--Peterson with a hinky back and Gore with a sprained ankle).
- Peterson still nurses a grudge against the 49ers from his rookie year, according to the San Jose Mercury News. In the running back's phenomenal first year in 2007, the then-lowly 49ers held him to three total yards. "That's a game that sticks in my mind constantly," Peterson says. "That was the worst game in my career. I'm not taking it lightly."
The Sporting News has picked the Vikings-49ers as its NFC game of the week. Oddsmakers have the Vikes as favorites by a touchdown.
