Two men shot in possible hate crime near U of M campus

Gunfire erupted early Wednesday morning only a block from the University of Minnesota campus.

At 2:20 a.m., Minneapolis and university police arrived at the scene near 14th Avenue and 6th Street SE, located near the U's busy athletic and fitness complex. Two men, including a 22-year-old Metropolitan State University student, Hussein Gelle, had sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Both were treated at the U of M Medical Center.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a gunman allegedly made disparaging remarks about Muslims before opening fire.

A Facebook post says the assailant reportedly said, "Fuck Muslims." That resulted in words exchanged, which in turn, led to the shooting.

Minneapolis police had no comment.
