Two boys injured by gunfire while riding Route 22 Metro Transit bus


Riders aboard the Route 22 bus were met by a hail of gunfire Sunday night that ended with two boys rushed to North Memorial Medical Center. It sounds like their injuries are not life threatening.

The bus was headed north on Humboldt Avenue at 53rd Avenue with about a dozen riders aboard when a half-dozen shots rang out, Metro Transit spokesman Bob Gibbons told the Strib.

The shootings capped a tragic weekend on the city's north side. Seventeen-year-old Alisha Neely was gunned down while hanging out at a house party near 35th Avenue N. and Humbolt Avenue on Saturday afternoon, making her the city's 10th homicide victim. Mourners gathered the the following day at the site of her shooting were forced to scatter a more gunshots rang out.

Only a few blocks away, at 38th Avenue N. and Dupont Avenue, mourners had also gathered Sunday to pray for Drew Heinkel, the city's 9th homicide victim. The 29-year-old was stabbed to death there on Feb. 13.
