We're three games in and the Twins are already a raging dumpster fire. Before the season started, fans were pissed about management's dumbfounding preference for crappy veterans over promising youngsters -- not to mention Ervin Santana's half-season suspension for steroids.
The team was outscored 22-1 in its first series in Detroit. The one run the Twins did manage was due to an error by a Tigers outfielder. Luckily, Fox Sports North color commentator Bert Blyleven is still willing to provide some entertainment on Twitter.
During yesterday's rain delay in Detroit, he decided to pass the time by taking shots at the Motor City. First he posted an innocuous thought in which he got the revised game time wrong, asking why the grounds crew hadn't taken the tarp off the field yet. Then, this:
Predictably, Detroit fans did not enjoy that tweet, sending him dozens of vicious replies that were more entertaining than anything on the field so far this season.
Ol' Bert didn't care. Instead, he doubled down.
Later it got worse. Detroit's CBS affiliate reports local sports talk host Jeff Riger approached Blyleven during the rain delay and asked about the tweet:
With an expletive not fit for print, Blyleven told Riger that fans should do something to themselves that is anatomically impossible and had to take it because "the city's ugly." Riger says it is unclear whether Blyleven was joking.
We reached out to Riger on Twitter and he declined to comment.
The Twins and Fox Sports North issued a joint apology for Blyleven's actions yesterday. He took down the offending tweets, replacing them with one that read, "I apologize for my comments: the city of Detroit. It is an exciting time here led by (Tigers owners) the Ilitch family."
