Team Bachmann still insists, yep, we're a "nation of slaves"
We're a "nation of slaves," Michele Bachmann insists.
No. We're not. We stopped that brutality a long time ago.
But what would prompt her to make such a crazy claim? Because the Obama administration has doubled the national debt from $5.8 trillion to $13.1 trillion -- that's what she told a group of right wingers recently in Colorado.
Yes, she mangled her facts (again). And not just about the slaves.
As the Strib pointed out this morning, the total national debt was $10.6 trillion on Jan. 20, 2009, the day Obama took over from former President George W. Bush. It is now about $13.2 trillion.
Oh, her spokesman told the Strib this morning. She was talking about public debt. See, that figure was at $5.8 trillion by the end of 2008. (Now it's $8.6 trillion.)
Basically, Bachmann fixed the math around a desired outcome.
Minor detail, Dave Dziok told the Strib.
"The bottom line is that both the public and total debt has increased significantly under President Obama and the Democrats' policies."
So much easier to say he just doubled the national debt.
