Yesterday, janitors who clean Target stores announced a two-day strike motivated by what they regard as inadequate pay and benefits, especially in comparison with what janitors who clean Target's corporate headquarters receive.

Some janitors who work for the contractors tasked with keeping Target stores clean reportedly make $8.50 an hour with no health coverage and no paid leave.

According to a Huffington Post report, that's a far cry from compensation for janitors who clean Target's corporate headquarters. Those workers make $13.92 per hour, are eligible for health coverage, and receive two weeks of paid vacation, seven paid holidays, and three sick days annually.

There's a picket action happening this morning outside Target's downtown store. The strike and picket were organized by the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (CTUL), a labor organization that has been working to organize 600 retail janitors in Minneapolis and St. Paul for three years, the Nation reports.

Target and the contractors it deals with aren't the only target (pardon the pun) of the strike. Other janitors taking part clean Sears, Kmart, Kohl's, and Home Depot stores but technically work for contractors like Carlson Building Maintenance, Diversified Maintenance Systems, Prestige Maintenance USA, and Eurest Services.

The janitors are technically striking over "unfair labor practices," including alleged union-busting activities. But as CTUL organizer Brian Payne told the HuffPo, "The end goal is to be able to get better wages and better working conditions, and to gain that through winning a union contract."

Here's a number of photos from this morning's picket:
