Steven Augustinack, almost Brainerd Citizen of the Year, sentenced for child porn possession

Steven Augustinack, porn addict.

Steven Augustinack, porn addict.

The Junior Chamber Jaycees of Brainerd completely misread Steve "Gus" Augustinack. While they were naming him 2010 Citizen of the Year, he was secretly getting his jollies from child porn videos on his home computer.

He had the good sense to turn the honor down once the cops moved in, grabbed his hard drive, and he was charged with 18 felony counts. But folks must have been shaking their heads at the news. Who knew?

Not the Brainerd Dispatch, for one. Augustinack's pre-porn recognition elicited this gushing editorial comment:

He follows in the tradition of many talented, committed Brainerd area men and women who preceded him as the Brainerd Citizen of the Year. People who are willing to go the extra mile for their communities when it would be easier to sit on the sideline are what make the Brainerd lakes area a great place to live.

A great place to keep a dirty little secret about porn addiction, too, evidently.

The secret got out when Minneapolis police working on a child-porn investigation were able to download six videos from an IP address belonging to Augustinack last June. Local police found a total of 75,000 videos on various hard drives; 28 contained suspected child pornography.

The 53-year-old man has now been sentenced to a five-year stayed prison term, and placed on probation. He'll spend six months in the Crow Wing County Jail and register as a predatory offender, and he's been ordered to stay away girls 16 years old or younger. His sentence starts June 15.
