Steve Drazkowski introduces Arizona-style anti-immigrant bill
He threatened he'd do it, and now he has: Republican state Rep. Steve Drazkowski has introduced a bill in the Minnesota House he says is modeled after the hardline anti-immigration law just passed in Arizona.
"The Democrats won't let us pass it, but we'll get some discussion started on it," he told us last week. "And then after the elections, I expect we'll have a legislature that will be ready to pass it."
Great. Arizona's law requires the police to stop and arrest anyone -- citizen or not -- who can't provide proof of legal residency or citizenship on demand. As soon as it was signed into law, the boycott calls went out, the Conference of Catholic Bishops denounced it, the NBA's Phoenix Suns renamed themselves Los Suns in protest, and everyone from Karl Rove to Barack Obama called it a huge mistake.
Can't wait for all that excitement here. Los Lobos at the Target Center, anyone?
H. F. 3830, A bill for an act relating to public safety; illegal immigration; requiring law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws; establishing eligibility criteria for federal and state public benefits; requiring possession of alien identification cards; prohibiting the transporting and smuggling of illegal immigrants; prohibiting illegal immigrants from working or soliciting work in the state; prohibiting the employment of illegal aliens; creating the Minnesota Illegal Immigration Enforcement Team; requiring the attorney general to represent the state against any challenges to this act; amending Minnesota Statutes 2009 Supplement, section 629.34, subdivision 1; proposing coding for new law as Minnesota Statutes, chapter 299P.
The bill was read for the first time and referred to the Committee on Public Safety Policy and Oversight.
