Sleepy Eye High School English teacher Calvin C. Collum will have six months behind bars to ponder the wisdom of playing around with a 16-year-old female student.

He was sentenced Tuesday in Brown County District Court after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in May. In addition to the 180 days in jail, Judge John Rodenberg gave Cullum 15 years supervised probation and fined him $1,500, and ordered him to register as a predatory sex offender.

Quoting from the criminal complaint, the Star Tribune reported, "One classmate told police that the girl and Collum often communicated by texting and through Facebook. The classmate knew the victim had spent weekends at the teacher's home. Another classmate said Collum would often direct compliments toward the victim, including references to how her jeans fit."

Cullum was arrested after a friend of the student reported the sexual relationship between the two to the police.
