Sarah Palin headlines teabagger week in Minnesota
Sarah Palin's coming to town to help Michele Bachmann raise money for her re-election campaign. Sean Hannity's pimping his new book here. The so called "Tea Party Express" plans stops in St. Paul and Duluth. Goodness, what more could a Minnesota conservative hope for? What about a photo op with Palin and Bachmann? It's yours for $10,000.
Just in time, AP's Brian Bakst has a piece carried widely this morning that attempts to put Minnesota tebaggers in context. He finds passion among them centered around issues not charismatic leaders, says members are setting low expectations for the 2010 election cycle, talks to Republicans who want to co-opt the movement and Democrats who call it a flash in the pan.
A new national survey quoted in The Hill attempts to tease out a little more data:
The national breakdown of the Tea Party composition is 57 percent Republican, 28 percent Independent and 13 percent Democratic, according to three national polls by the Winston Group, a Republican-leaning firm that conducted the surveys on behalf of an education advocacy group. Two-thirds of the group call themselves conservative, 26 are moderate and 8 percent say they are liberal.
As does Gallup:
Tea Party supporters skew right politically; but demographically, they are generally representative of the public at large. That's the finding of a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted March 26-28, in which 28% of U.S. adults call themselves supporters of the Tea Party movement. ... Tea Party supporters are decidedly Republican and conservative in their leanings. Also, compared with average Americans, supporters are slightly more likely to be male and less likely to be lower-income.
