Roller derby brawl in St. Paul this weekend

The all-American contact sport of roller derby, in which women on skates sling each other around a small track while trying to elbow their opponents senseless in order to--well, we're actually not sure what the goal is; the sport seems to be mostly about the spectacle--will be on grand display at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul from Friday through Sunday.

Teams from 10 leagues in the Upper Midwest, including our own Minnesota RollerGirls all-stars, will take part in the "Brawl of America," a series of 15 bouts for the North Regional championship of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. The top three teams continue on to Philadelphia for the national championship. (The RollerGirls are seeded sixth.)

Tickets are $20 per day or $50 for the weekend (and bring the kids! Ages 9 and under are free), with after-parties at the Liffey and at a Lowertown pub crawl.
