Royal Barcelona superstar Ricky Rubio is going to fulfill his NBA dreams after all, by joining the team with the worst 2010-11 record in the NBA in time to play next season.
The Timberwolves haven't said an official word, but AP confirmed the move quoting unnamed sources last night. Evidently all sides are trying to keep the news quiet while Rubio and Barcelona compete in the Spanish playoffs. After that, he's headed this way.
The Timberwolves have been after this 21-year-old prodigy since drafting him in 2009; he's played professionally since he was 14 years old. The hangup: A $6 million contract buyout that Rubio would have had to pay himself.[jump]
There were also persistent rumors, denied by Rubio himself, that the 6 feet 4 inch, 190 pound point guard wasn't really that interested in hoops on the tundra.
"Ricky Rubio huh?" Kevin Love tweeted last night. "I'll believe it when I see it."
Is Rubio, who "looks like a 12-year-old aspiring indie rocker still trying to kick an unhealthy Harry Potter addiction," worth the hoopla? With only a few reservations, Ben Polk got a look at him in action last year for CP and sounded pretty damned upbeat. And the truth is, the Timberwolves have nowhere to go but up, anyway. So this is good news.
