"At some point you either lose the will and give in to the fear or run."

Reader Sarah Allan responds to Nicholas Lehmeier threatened to shoot girlfriend as she breastfed their baby:

"It would be hard to understand [why the girlfriend didn't leave] if you were never in an abusive relationship. And even having been in one myself where I got out, I still don't get why I didn't leave sooner.

"At some point you either lose the will and give in to the fear or run. With the verbal and emotional abuse that usually starts first, you don't always see it coming. That doesn't mean you're wrong to question it. (Don't think I'm trying to start anything here. This is a good question.) There just a lot more to it.

"I wish this was never the way."
