Reader: Murals of Lynlake bans all flags, not just the Pride

Contrary to what Cory Zurowski mentions in his misleading and defamatory story, A ban on Pride flags at the Murals of Lynlake in Uptown, The Murals was never offered an opportunity to respond before its publication. If we had been, the headline would have read: A ban on ALL flags, banners, and signs at the Murals of Lynlake, which wouldn't have been much of a story at all.

The deceitful headline you allowed above his story misled the reader into believing that the enforcement of our no-flag policy had something to do with anti-gay bias. It didn't.

It was about affording and/or denying the same privileges to all residents equally, a/k/a Fair Housing. The residents with the Pride flag somehow felt entitled to be the exception to the rule and tried to resort to public shaming when they didn't get their way.

Had the writer troubled himself to check his facts first, he would have learned that this apartment community is owned and managed by one of the most gay-friendly companies around. We would have clarified for him that our no-flag policy is strictly a design aesthetic for the sake of the property's overall appearance – one that the owners have the sole right to choose and uniformly enforce.

Such privileges of ownership might offend the writer's apparent bias against private property rights, but that's no excuse for abusing his position to smear us.

And, by the way, that guitar player on the roof in the accompanying photo is endangering himself and others and is indeed most likely violating his lease terms. If he were one of our renters and we caught him in the act, he would be cited. And then you would probably spin it into a story about how we discriminate against musicians.
