The American Future Fund will spend $207,000 to air its pro-Romney 'Janesville' ad here in Minnesota, Politico reports this morning.

The ad focuses on one of the more widely criticized components of Paul Ryan's RNC speech -- the notion that Obama somehow broke a campaign promise when the Janesville, Wisconsin GM plant closed in December 2008... while George W. Bush was president.

With a slogan of "President Obama. Hopeful words. Disappointing results," the ad seizes upon a statement Obama made while campaigning in Janesville in February 2008.

Here's what Obama said (emphasis mine):

"And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years. The question is not whether a clean energy economy is in our future, it's where it will thrive. I want it to thrive right here in the United States of America; right here in Wisconsin; and that's the future I'll fight for as your president."

Notice how Obama's statement is an if-then conditional. But in the 'Janesville' ad, Republicans ignore logical subtleties and portray Obama's statement as an unconditional promise to keep the plant open. Compounding one lie with another, the ad makes it seem as though the plant closed under Obama's leadership, when in fact it closed a month before he took office in January 2009. (Several dozen workers stayed on another four months to finish manufacturing an order of Isuzu trucks, but 1,200 workers were laid off on December 23, 2008.)

PolitiFact rated the part of Ryan's speech addressing the Janesville plant as "False."

Obama's campaign remarks were "a statement of belief that, with government help, the Janesville plant could remain open -- but not a promise to keep it open," PolitiFact notes.
