Most Minnesotans support cops demanding citizenship papers

A new Rassmussen poll finds that while Minnesotans are more liberal than other Americans in their opinions on illegal immigration, that's not necessarily saying much.

Sure, Minnesota came in second to last among the 16 states polled on the question of whether police should have to check the immigration status of people they encounter in traffic stops. But they still support the immigration status checks by a two-to-one margin.

Of course, the top cops in the state's two biggest cities are totally opposed to the idea. So is Tim Pawlenty's pastor. But the poll results suggest that when Rep. Steve Drazkowski filed legislation to copy Arizona's controversial legislation in Minnesota he may have actually had his finger on the pulse of something.

Something ugly and racist, maybe, but something nonetheless.
