Minnesota Senate approves marriage equality

The Wabasha Street Bridge certainly looked the part today.

This afternoon, the Minnesota Senate followed the House and approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriage with a 37-30 vote.

:::: UPDATE :::: Mark Dayton signs gay marriage bill into law

Gov. Mark Dayton is reportedly wasting little time and planning to sign the legislation into law during a ceremony tomorrow afternoon, so it's now a foregone conclusion that gays will be able to get married as of August 1.

Only one Republican voted in favor of the bill: Sen. Branden Petersen, R-Andover, who pledged his support all the way back in February. Three Democrats voted against marriage equality: Dan Sparks, D-Austin; LeRoy Stumpf, D-Plummer; and Lyle Koenen, D-Clara City (read more about their rationale here).

Minnesota will become the 12th state to legalize gay marriage, and the first in the Midwest to legalize it via legislation. In Iowa, marriage equality was the result of a state Supreme Court decision, and no other state in the region has it.

What a difference seven months can make, right guys?
