:::: UPDATE :::: Robin Smothers, spokesperson for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, tells us this morning that a maintenance crew will be out cleaning up the graffiti today. She says it hasn't yet been decided whether the graffiti will be removed with a power-washer or solvent.
Yesterday, David Tinjum, publisher of the Mill City Times, published photos showing the Mill Ruins Park defaced by graffiti. One is visible above.
After reading Tinjum's post, we called Robin Smothers, spokesperson for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, to get more information. Turns our call was the first she had heard of the vandalism.
"We have no idea when it occurred," Smothers told us, adding that a worker had been dispatched to file a police report. "These things happen at night when there's less people there, and I can also say that warm weather increases the amount of graffiti because people can be outside for longer periods of time."
Asked how the board pays to get the graffiti removed, Smothers said, "There's no separate line item for keeping it up, it's just part of our budget for maintenance of the parks."
Smothers said the board doesn't keep a record of graffiti incidents, so she couldn't speak to how often incidents of this sort occur.
Tinjum, publisher of the Mill City Times for four years, tells us he's not familiar with previous incidents of graffiti vandalism at Mill Ruins Park.
"On the Stone Arch Bridge, on top of it where you walk, there's been a couple of incidents, but not for at least a year," he says.
