Michele Bachmann endorses Romney months after saying Mitt "cannot beat Obama"
Open wide, Michele. You're about to eat your own words.
Today in Virginia, Bachmann announced she's "honored" to endorse Mitt Romney for president, characterizing Mitt as "a man who will preserve the American dream of prosperity and liberty."
Bachmann must be planning to play the conservative foil to President Obama for four more years. Because just four months ago, she said categorically that Romney "cannot beat Obama."
[Romney] cannot beat Obama because his policy is the basis for Obamacare. The signature issue of Obama is Obamacare. You can't have a candidate who has given the blueprint for Obamacare. It's too identical. It's not going to happen. We have to have a candidate, a bold distinct candidate in the likeness of Ronald Reagan.
Bachmann's January comments came a month after she described Romney as "the only governor in the history of the United States to put into place socialized medicine."
Michele loves Ronald Reagan, but Mitt is no Gipper.
Though she gave Romney her endorsement today, Bachmann's tone remained less than totally enthusiastic -- she said "on November 6th, the only option is Mitt Romney for president." Reading between the lines, it seems she's implying that America's choice is between one guy who is really frickin' bad and another guy who at least has an "R" before his name when it appears in print.
The perception that Michele is lukewarm about Romney wasn't exactly dispelled by former Bachmann campaign manager Keith Nahigian, who told MSNBC that one reason his former employer is endorsing Romney is because "he was so polite to her every time they saw each other."
Let's face it -- Bachmann would probably prefer Hologram Reagan to flesh-and-blood Romney.
