Mexican cartel busted in Minneapolis
Thirty-one people in Minneapolis have been arrested in federal raids on a dangerous Mexican drug cartel. More than 1,000 have been busted across the country.
Attorney General Eric Holder announced the bust today. Across the nation, 300 people have been arrested in the last two days -- the largest single bust of a Mexican drug cartel in U.S. history, according to Holder. In total, 1,186 people have been arrested.
The raids are the result of a 44-month investigation that the U.S. Department of Justice has dubbed Project Coronado. The target of the investigation is La Familia, which Holder describes as Mexico's newest and most violent cartel:
Alleged to have shipped large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine from Mexico to cities throughout the United States, La Familia is one of three Mexican drug trafficking organizations against which the United States imposed sanctions earlier this year under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.
The sheer level and depravity of violence that this cartel has exhibited far exceeds what we have, unfortunately, become accustomed to from other cartels. La Familia operates primarily from the state of Michoacán, Mexico. However, as we've shown today, their operations stretch far into the United States. Indeed, while this cartel may operate from Mexico, the toxic reach of its operations extends to nearly every state in the country.
Agents have seized $32 million and 2,700 pounds of methamphetamine. Here is a link to the Department of Justice Web site, with Holder's statement and more details.
