Spurs mascot chases down bat before Timberwolves game [video]

NBA mascot is an underrated profession. Beyond having an arsenal of trick dunks and an insatiable appetite for high-fives, the job description can include all kinds of wacky tasks.

For the San Antonio Spurs Coyote, those duties include animal control. Before a Monday night matchup against the Timberwolves, a bat got loose inside the AT&T Center. The players, who had already begun pregame warmups, were sent back to the locker rooms as the winged critter flew over the court. But instead of calling a trained professional, the Spurs tapped the character whose claim to fame is dunking a basketball and a doughnut in the same game.

This wasn’t the Coyote’s first rodeo. The team keeps a Batman getup at the ready for such occasions. Armed with a net and an anonymous entertainer’s gumption, the Coyote gave chase for a minute or so, circling the court and whiffing with his net. Eventually the determined predator caught his prey. Fortunately for the internet, the absurdity was captured on “Bat cam” and set to the Batman theme song, natch.

While the mascot’s heroics were admirable, its bat-catching skills pale in comparison to Spurs star Manu Ginobili, who famously knocked down a bat that interrupted a 2009 Halloween game. Despite their wellspring of skilled bat hunters, the Spurs should probably just hire an exterminator at this point.
