Mark Dayton rips Paul Ryan for fudging Grandma's Marathon time... by over an hour

Paul Ryan has been nicknamed Lyin' Paul Ryan after delivering an RNC speech that left pants throughout the country spontaneously combusted.

Turns out, Ryan lies about the small stuff, too. During a speech today at the DNC in Charlotte, Gov. Mark Dayton called out the Wisconsin congressman for seriously fudging his finishing time for the 1990 Grandma's Marathon in Duluth.

During an August 22 interview with Hugh Hewitt, Ryan was asked about his history as a distance runner (emphasis mine):

PR: [In high school] I was [in] student government and athletics, honor society, you know, that kind of thing. I was kind of a combination. I was class president my junior year, I was the school board rep my senior year. I lettered in varsity, you know, my first year in high school, mostly soccer and track. I was a distance runner and a soccer player. So kind of well-rounded. I can't, I can play a cowbell. That's about it for instruments.

HH: Are you still running?

PR: Yeah, I hurt a disc in my back, so I don't run marathons anymore. I just run ten miles or yes.

HH: But you did run marathons at some point?

PR: Yeah, but I can't do it anymore, because my back is just not that great.

HH: I've just gotta ask, what's your personal best?

PR: Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.

HH: Holy smokes. All right, now you go down to Miami University...

PR: I was fast when I was younger, yeah.

Surprise! Turns out Ryan was full of shit. Runner's World did some digging and found that Ryan only completed one marathon -- the 1990 Grandma's Marathon in Duluth. Ryan, then 20, is listed as finishing in four hours, one minute, and 25 seconds. You can't exactly round 4:00:01 down to 2:50:00.

Ryan later apologized for the fib -- his marathon-seasoned brother "gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight," he said -- but the potential VP's propensity to ignore the truth shouldn't escape the notice of voters, Dayton said today.

"What bothered me is that not only did he totally misrepresent what he's done in this marathon but when he finally acknowledged it, it was just disingenuous as it was the first time," Dayton said. "He said 'Well, I rounded up to three when I should have rounded up to four.' Well even from Wisconsin you should know the difference between three and four."
