A nightclub that once closed a few years ago because of too many fights is back in the news.

Kongmeng Lee, a 21-year-old guy from St. Paul, is accused of taking a box cutter to three people outside Maplewood's Stargate nightclub, also known as Club Energy, early last Friday morning.

Cops say that by the time he was through with his handiwork, two 19-year-olds and a 23-year-old were slashed and stabbed in their faces, hands, and chests.

No one died in the bloody mess, but his three victims, all men, warranted treatment at local hospitals after a couple of off-duty Ramsey County deputies working security intervened.

Lee was arrested by Maplewood police and made his first court appearance Monday in Ramsey County. He's been charged with three counts of felony second-degree assault.

It's not clear why Lee went on his rampage at the nightclub on Rice Street near Larpenteur Avenue, which re-opened in 2008 under new ownership. But some witnesses told the Pioneer Press that Lee and another man exchanged words as they were leaving, and Lee brought out the weapon. The others were injured when they tried to protect the first victim.
