Keith Ellison tells Maher he wishes Democrats would come out against Second Amendment [VIDEO]
Ellison: "If you want to have grandpa's shotgun, have it, but get rid of those crazy military-style assault weapons."
During an appearance on Bill Maher's HBO show over the weekend, Keith Ellison said he wishes Democrats would come out against the Second Amendment.
Gun permits issued in Minnesota doubled last year
"Why doesn't your party come out against the Second Amendment? It's a problem," Maher asks, to which Ellison replies, "I sure wish they would. I sure wish they would."
It should be noted, however, that earlier in the segment Ellison said, "I don't think you have to eliminate ownership of all guns in order to get some common-sense gun rules." So what he means in saying he wishes Dems would come out against the Second Amendment isn't totally clear.
Nonetheless, at least one conservative website is having a field day with Ellison's comments.
We contacted Ellison's office seeking comment and were told we'd receive a response shortly. We'll update this post when we do. (UPDATE -- spokesman Mike Casca got in touch and said Ellison's quote that gun ownership doesn't have to be eliminated "is a more accurate portrayal of his stance" than the subsequent comment pertaining to Democrats coming out against the Second Amendment.)
Here's the raw video (you can read a transcript of the segment here):
