We know KDWB superfans aren't exactly the smartest people in the Twin Cities (trust us, we used to run with that crowd) but what's with the willingness to be tortured for more than 24 hours just to win a prize?
This time the contestants will compete against each other to see who can last the longest on the Nickelodeon Universe Spongebob Squarepants Rock Bottom Plunge rollercoaster at the Mall of America. Well we have to admit it sounds better than the people who chose to sit in a crammed car during the entire Minnesota State Fair in the heat of the summer. That's just vomit and rash-inducing.
The contest is in celebration of the one-year anniversary of Nickelodeon Universe. The "Coast for the Cruise" competition starts Wednesday, March 25 at 6 a.m. with eight people picked by KDWB. The winner will have to out-ride everyone else.
According to Nickelodeon Universe, the coaster "ascends 90 degrees to the top, plummets at 97 degrees and goes into an upside-down loop. Riders experience 5G forces and intense twists and turns at 59 mph."
So why the torture? The last person on the ride wins a vacation on the Nickelodeon Family Cruise with Royal Caribbean International, including airfare and $1,000 spending money - valued at more than $10,000. The winner will also receive a lifetime pass to the MOA park. The other contestants win two annual passes to Nickelodeon Universe valued at approximately $500 just for trying the stunt.
We were interested in what these folks were going to deal with during the contest. The official rules are pretty hilarious. In short, no sex, drugs or alcohol allowed. Well count us out. And if you puke, pee or shit yourself, it's an automatic disqualification. That's pretty fair.
3. Contestants will ride on the SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge from the hours of 6am to 12am (midnight). And the best rule of all:
There will be one, 10-minute break approximately every one hour, starting at 7am on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 in which contestants will exit the ride (escorted by MOA/KDWB personnel) to use the rest room. There will be a total of three (3) extended breaks for meal times. Contestants must stay on the SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge for the overnight break, 12am (midnight) to 6am when the ride is not in operation.
No items of any kind (besides the clothing attire, approved by MOA/KDWB, which you are wearing) will be allowed inside the SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge during the hours of operation of the ride. All contestants will be allowed to bring the following: cell phone, 1 pillow, 1 blanket, 1 toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, lip balm, one change of emergency clothing (to be used at the discretion of MOA/KDWB judges), and any needed medication. One luxury item will also be allowed during breaks as approved by MOA/KDWB representatives prior to start of contest. (example iPod, etc).
No indecent exposure permitted. No sexual aberration is allowed by any of the contestants either alone or with others. No sexual activity of any sort is allowed inside the vehicle or within the park. Any activity of this nature taking place will be grounds for disqualification, at the sole discretion of MOA/KDWB representatives.
Vomiting and/or bodily waste elimination, and the release of any bodily fluids will result in immediate disqualification of any contestant. This includes vomiting food and/or water. If such incidents occur, MOA/KDWB reserves the right to call an official "timeout" to allow for clean up of the seating area before the contest resumes.
15. No contestant will be allowed to wear diapers or use a "Motorman's Friend" (a device used by truckers to extract urine from the body.) Any person using any devices to extract bodily fluids will be disqualified. You'll be able to watch a live Web cam of the contestants here.
