Joe Mauer switching positions, becoming first baseman [UPDATE]

Joe Mauer's season-ending August concussion fueled speculation he might switch from catcher to first base in time for the 2014 season, during which he'll be 31 years old.

Today, the Twins made it official: Mauer's days getting beat up behind the plate are through. Next year, he'll be the Twins' full-time first baseman.

Today's announcement also means it appears extremely unlikely the Twins will pursue a rumored reunion with free agent first baseman Justin Morneau.
