The youngest of three brothers, Derek Hexum of Balaton is accused of murdering Jim and Cathy Hively.

The three young men featured in City Pages' recent cover story "The Evil That Boys Do" will go on trial separately beginning March 21, when Derek Hexum faces charges of first degree burglary, second degree murder, and first degree arson in connection with the spring murder of an elderly Balaton couple

The trial for alleged accomplice Theodore "Ted" Como, who's charged with aiding first degree burglary, aiding second degree murder, aiding first degree arson, and aiding second degree arson, will follow May 16.

The case against 22-year-old Kyle Wesselink is scheduled for July 11. Wesselink faces charges of aiding first degree burglary, aiding first degree arson, and being an accessory after the fact to second degree murder.

After stealing a truck and a shotgun at a home near the town of Ghent in April, Hexum and Como are alleged to have driven the pickup to Jim and Cathy Hively's Balaton farmhouse to commit another burglary, but something went awry. Hexum is accused of murdering the couple with a shotgun. He and Como then enlisted Wesselink before the Hively home was set ablaze in an attempt to cover up the crimes.

The trials are scheduled to take place at the Lyon County Courthouse in downtown Marshall.
