Hold Gitmo detainees in Minnesota? Two state Dems disagree
Plans to close Guantanamo Bay's detention facility for suspected terrorists has because quite the controversy for the Obama administration, which has led to strong disagreements even within the Democratic party. While many seem ready to close the facility, the idea of where to put the prisoners becomes a new source of debate.
Earlier this week, Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota said he would be open to housing some of the detainees in Minnesota in some of our high-level detention facilities. On Thursday, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said our state can't handle the detainees because we don't have the high-level security facilities required.
So do we welcome Gitmo detainees with open arms or kick them to some other sad state?
Walz made the Gitmo detainee comment during a conference call about his trip to the Middle East.
More from Minnesota Public Radio:
Walz said Guantanamo should be closed, and the detainees there should be dealt with appropriately. He said that could include care at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester.
"If all the procedures are in place, as they've been done with everyone else, if we're very clear on what the legal avenues that these people have, I think our professionals there can handle it," Walz said.
Klobuchar's contrasting statement, from the Rochester Post-Bulletin:
"There is no place in Minnesota for prisoners from Guantanamo," said Klobuchar. "We do not have the high-security facilities needed to hold these detainees."
Reps. Michele Bachmann and John Kline both said earlier this year that they don't want Gitmo detainees sent to Minnesota.
