Hevvn, a New Twin Cities Swingers Club, Offers a High-Brow Orgy

itemprop

Everyone loves mac and cheese, but maybe after 20 years of mac and cheese you might fancy yourself a chicken wing.

That analogy is something you hear a lot in swingers circles -- that loving, committed coitus is a lot like comfort food, but some couples choose to zest up their sex lives by swapping their wives every once in a while. It isn't for everybody, but HEVVN, the Twin Cities' latest membership-based swingers club, proposes that a whole lot of monogamists would love trying out someone new if they only had a safe place to do so.

HEVVN founder Thomas Michael is a 28-year-old singleton who's never done any swinging of his own. He says he was just researching different startup ideas when it struck him that the Twin Cities' swingers scene was seriously repressed. There was basically Craigslist, which everyone knows is shady as hell, and then there were the club orgies rank with bed-hoppers looking to roll with a different team every night. There was nothing, it seemed, that would appeal to established couples interested in partying with other couples -- maybe after a potluck dinner and a movie.

Michael used to work at the local Events and Adventures singles club, and he admits he's pretty much just selling that same model of casual group hangouts with a heavy sexual subtext. His job is to prescreen members for criminal backgrounds and other nastiness -- "I don't really like to use the word 'creeps,'" Michael said. "But there's always that segment of people that have bad motives. Or they don't really know how to be social without being predatorial. I don't really know how to describe it without coming off as rude ... but yeah, some people are creeps and you don't want your people around them."

Heartbreak and other emotional pitfalls are on the clients. HEVVN is officially launching in February, but Michael says he's already signed about 20 members in the one week that the website has been live. Most of them are in their 40s and 50s, white and middle-class. It makes sense -- these guys aren't looking to meet up with strange kids of indeterminate sexual health at raves.

David Ortega, who asked that we not use his real name, is a Minnetonka businessman in his 40s who volunteers in the community and hosts small swingers gatherings at home. He says he and his wife contacted Michael about HEVVN to offer their mansion as a possible venue for meet and greet parties.

"A lot of startups come and go, but I think this is a specialty niche, especially in the suburbs, so there needs to be some kind of private club for like-minded people like this," Ortega said. He hasn't met Michael in person yet, but Ortega says he expects the younger businessman to find a partner in the industry soon, at which point they'll have to have him over for dinner.
