Heidi Firkus death in St. Paul home ruled a homicide

The autopsy of Heidi Firkus, the 25-year-old killed in her Hamline-Midway home Sunday morning, confirmed that the cause of her death was the shotgun blast that hit her in the back.

As a result, St. Paul police are treating her death as a homicide. But so far, at least, they haven't arrested anyone in the case.

The gun that shot Firkus belongs to her husband Nicholas, 27.

He told police he went downstairs Sunday morning after hearing the sounds of an intruder. There he encountered a tall man of unknown race, and in the struggle, his double-barreled shotgun went off twice.

The first shot killed his wife. The second grazed his leg.

Police haven't found any signs of forced entry into the house, but say it will take time to process all the evidence from the scene of the shooting.

Meanwhile, it's been reported that the couple was due to be evicted the next day, following a foreclosure last summer. Police say so far there is no apparent connection between the eviction and the shootings.
