Information below is from the Worcester Telegram and Gazette:
William Smith was stabbed once in the chest and pronounced dead around 2:45 a.m., according to information from the Worcester Police Department and Becker College.
Reached in Maryland yesterday, William Smith’s aunt, Cindy Smith, described her nephew as “fun loving” and easy to get along with. Family members couldn’t understand why the young man was stabbed in a fight.
“He’s a nice kid. He gets along with everyone,” she said. The family planned to fly to Massachusetts today.
No arrests have been made in connection with the killing. Police said there was a group of 50 people at the scene when they were called to the area at 2:02 a.m. Some people in the group were area college students and some were not, authorities said. Detective Captain Edward J. McGinn Jr. said "a fight triggered inside which ultimately spilled outside onto the street.''
Capt. McGinn said police do not believe the assailants were Becker College students.
No word from Tubby Smith on the incident. He was out of the office Monday.
