Gideon Arrington is allegedly the cop impersonator linked to sexual assault [UPDATE]
-- Updates at bottom --
Gideon Arrington, a 35-year-old Brooklyn Park resident, was arrested earlier this week in connection with a Fridley sexual assault where the suspect, posing as a police officer, lured a women to his SUV in broad daylight before kidnapping and assaulting her, KSTP reports.
That November 23 assault took place just hours before a similar sexual assault occurred in the Dinkytown area.
Arrington was arrested by Anoka County authorities and is currently being held on suspicion of sexual assault in connection with the Fridley case, but according to KSTP's report, the Anoka County Sheriff's office says the two cases are "most likely related." Both victims provided similar descriptions of the suspect and the SUV he was driving.
:::: UPDATE ::::
In statement distributed by MPD spokesperson Cyndi Barrington just after we published this, the MPD denied knowing anything about a link between the Fridley and Dinkytown assaults. Here's the statement:
At this time, based on investigative data, the Minneapolis Police Department does not have any evidence that leads us to believe that the CSCR that occurred in Minneapolis on 11/24/13 is related to the CSCR that occurred in Fridley. The MPD case is an on-going investigation and investigators are awaiting results from evidence that is being tested at the BCA.
:::: UPDATE II ::::
Arrington has been officially charged with felony criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.
KARE 11, citing the criminal complaint, details how investigators say the Fridley sexual assault went down:
The victim told police that a man, later identified as Arrington, had approached her in the [Fridley] parking lot, told her he was a detective, and began asking her questions. She left to run some errands, and when she returned the same man put a gun at her back and forced her into his vehicle. The victim says she was blindfolded, handcuffed and driven to an unknown location where she was raped at least twice over several hours.
Eventually, the victim says Arrington scrubbed her body with a bleach-like solution, washed her clothes, and drove her to a bus stop where he removed her blindfold, put two dollars in her pocket and told her to take a bus home. [The victim subsequently flagged down a cab, told the driver she'd been sexually assaulted, and was brought to the police.]
She was taken to a hospital and [swabbed] with a sexual assault kit. Samples taken from the woman were sent to the BCA for DNA testing, which matched a profile from Arrington. The witness who saw the struggle in the parking lot also identified Arrington as the man responsible for kidnapping the victim.
