Ex-Twin LaTroy Hawkins gets hit in balls with a ball, offers great quote afterward [GIFs]
During the 12th inning of game last night, former Twin LaTroy Hawkins -- still pitching in the big leagues at the ripe old age of 40 (he debuted with the Twins in 1995!) -- got smoked right in the balls with a ball.
To make matters worse, he wasn't wearing a cup. Ouch!
Here's a GIF of that unfortunate play:
He was hurting, but stayed in the game. And of course, a bewildered-looking Hawkins could do nothing but watch with a bewildered look on his face as the very next batter blasted a game-tying home run (the Mets ultimately lost):
After the game, Hawkins offered up this unforgettable quote about how it felt to get hit in his man jewels with no protection to soften the blow:
"It was a direct hit -- no cup. When I lifted my leg, I could feel my balls in my throat."
Apparently, he wasn't exaggerating:
Unlike his teammates, Hawkins being carted to the team bus. He's still in a good bit of pain two hours later. #Mets

Later, Hawkins tweeted that he wasn't looking forward to the bus ride from L.A. to San Diego:

Hawkins, according to Deadspin, also said he might reconsider his no-cup stance. Apparently even 40-year-old pro athletes can learn something new, especially when their balls get crushed in more ways than one.
