Eugene Rakow somehow survived shooting himself in the heart with a nail gun [X-RAY]
Eugene Rakow (bottom left) and his x-ray after he accidentally shot a nail right through his heart.
Eugene Rakow, a 58-year-old St. Bonifacius carpenter, shot himself in the heart with a nail gun last Friday. He somehow lived to tell the tale.
The amazing x-ray image at the top of this post was taken at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Rakow was released from the hospital and returned home on Monday.
In an interview with the Star Tribune, Rakow explained how things went so terribly wrong while he was building a deck for a neighbor.
"I was leaning against a board with the gun," he said. "I had the gun at an angle, chest level, and it jumped and I still had my hand on the trigger. It impaled the nail in my chest."
Rakow said doctors told him nine of 10 people would've died from that injury, but he got exceedingly lucky.
The doctor who performed the surgery, Louis B. Louis (that's really his name!), told the Strib, "This nail went through the front and the back of his heart, barely missing critical structures."
