Nothing will throw a wrench into an excellent afternoon out ice fishing like running out of beer, or having to make an unplanned food run. After a couple three, four, ten beers, the last thing you want to do is head back into town, especially if the crappies are biting.
If you live near Ely, Nicolas Jordan's new company, Ely Safe Ride, has you covered. See also: Wisconsin's Lakemaid Beer Company Test Beer Delivery Via Drones
For a flat $5 fee one of his drivers will pick up booze at Beaver Liquors and/or food at any of the restaurants in town and drive it out to an ice shack within five miles. Every mile outside of that costs an extra buck.
Customers have to call ahead to Beaver or the restaurant and place their order before calling Ely Safe Ride.
"When I started the company it was primarily bar-close traffic, and just going through it mentally this seemed like the next step," said Jordan. "There's people who spend a couple days out on the ice, there's people who spend a few hours out there, and if they need food or beverage service I'd hate to see somebody who's inebriated or too tired to drive have to go back into town."
Note to Ely High Schoolers: The drivers will be carding and won't sell booze if it looks like it will be handed off to minors.
Jordan said he hasn't gotten a call for ice house delivery yet, but there are a few clusters of houses already out on the ice.
