Elena Bayerl, 19, hit by train while listening to music with earbuds
Earbuds are great, but having them in your head while out and about carries a sometimes underappreciated risk -- they block out the sounds of everything happening around you, and some of them are important to hear.
Elena Bayerl, a 19-year-old Isanti-area resident, learned that lesson the hard way yesterday when she was hit by a train she couldn't hear because she had earbuds in.
According to Isanti County authorities, Bayerl was walking with two men along the railroad tracks just south of Isanti around 3:30 p.m. when a train approached. Her acquaintances yelled at her to get out of the way, but she couldn't hear them or the train whistle.
Bayerl's acquaintances ran to grab her out of the way, but by the time the two were within arm's length it was too late. She was struck by the train, which at the time was moving about 50 miles per hour.
The Isanti County News reports that Bayerl remained conscious after being hit and was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where at last update she was in critical condition.
